Garc\u00eda-Garibay discussed nature, plants and insects on mountain hikes with his father, who was an elementary school teacher. By middle school, Garc\u00eda-Garibay excelled at biology and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate, he joined a chemistry research laboratory group in his sophomore year and conducted research for three years, with the goal of discovering new natural products in plants.\u00a0 He collected plant specimens \u2014 many used in traditional medicine \u2014 and brought them back to the laboratory to identify their components.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>After completing a combined degree in Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacy, Garc\u00eda-Garibay went on to get a PhD degree in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia, where he joined the group of Prof. John Scheffer.\u00a0 After that, he joined the group of Prof. Nick Turro as a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>A renowned scholar at the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Garc\u00eda-Garibay is now serving as Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences in the UCLA College of Letters and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Email<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mgg@chem.ucla.edu\">mgg@chem.ucla.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mgg.chem.ucla.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Garcia-Garibay-CV-June-2019.pdf\">Download CV<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miguel A.
